AC Contactors and Relays in Goa: Switching the Outdoor Unit Safely
A contactor is an electrically operated switch that turns the compressor and outdoor fan on and off when the control board or thermostat calls for cooling. Relays do a similar job on a smaller scale, often on the PCB itself. Because these parts switch heavy loads many times a day, their contacts wear out. This page explains how to find replacement AC contactors and relays in Goa.
Signs of a Worn Contactor
- The outdoor unit does not start even though the indoor unit is running
- A buzzing or chattering noise from the outdoor electrical box
- The outdoor unit keeps running after the AC is switched off, which can mean welded contacts
- Burnt, pitted or blackened contact points
Insects, dust and humidity inside the outdoor unit can also cause contacts to fail, a common problem during Goa’s monsoon.
Details That Decide Compatibility
- Coil voltage: commonly 24 V or 230 V AC, and it must match the control circuit
- Current rating: in amps, equal to or higher than the original
- Number of poles: single-pole, double-pole or three-pole
- Mounting and terminal layout: so it fits the existing space and wiring
All of this is usually printed on the contactor body. A photo of the label is the easiest way to match it.
Overloads and Protection Devices
Many units also use thermal overload protectors on the compressor and fuses or MCBs in the supply. If a contactor fails repeatedly, a technician should check for low voltage, a weak capacitor or a struggling compressor that is drawing high current.
Safety
Contactors carry mains voltage. Replacement should be done by a trained technician with the power isolated.
