AC Capacitors in Goa: A Simple Guide to Ratings and Replacement

Capacitors are among the most commonly replaced parts in air conditioners, and they are also among the cheapest. A motor capacitor gives single-phase motors the extra push they need to start and keeps them running efficiently. When it weakens, the compressor or fan struggles, overheats or fails to start. This page explains how to find the correct AC capacitors in Goa.

Signs of a Failing Capacitor

  • The outdoor unit hums but the compressor does not start
  • The outdoor fan does not spin, or spins only when pushed
  • The AC starts and then trips after a short time
  • The capacitor body is bulging, leaking or burnt

Goa’s heat and frequent voltage fluctuations during storms shorten capacitor life, so these faults are common in peak summer and monsoon months.

How to Read a Capacitor Label

Capacitance is shown in microfarads (µF or MFD). A dual capacitor shows two values, such as 35+5 µF, one for the compressor and one for the fan. Voltage rating, often 440 VAC or 450 VAC, must be equal to or higher than the original. Terminals on dual capacitors are usually marked C (common), HERM (compressor) and FAN. The label may also show a tolerance, such as ±5%.

Why the Exact Value Matters

Fitting a capacitor with the wrong microfarad value changes how the motor runs. Too low and the motor struggles to start; too high and it can overheat. Always replace like for like, using the values printed on the original capacitor or in the AC service manual.

Safety First

Capacitors can hold a charge even after power is switched off. Replacement should be done by a trained technician who discharges the capacitor safely before handling it.
